Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) is expected to play an important role in reducing emissions from the energy and industrial sectors and can even help achieve negative emissions. It is expected that a global capture capacity of more than 150 times that of today will be needed in 2050. To reach this level of deployment, economic and technological improvements will be needed throughout the whole value chain. One important step of the CCUS value chain is the conditioning process, where the captured CO2 is liquefied and purified before transportation. This process ensures that CO2 complies with requirements from the transport operators and off-takers.
The performance and, therefore, costs of the conditioning process are highly affected by the requirements from the off-takers. It was investigated how the system performance and costs were affected by different delivery pressures (7 bar, 15 bar, and 53 bar). By optimizing the design and operation of the system the lowest costs were achieved when delivering liquid CO2 at 53 bar. At a delivery pressure of 15 bar, high levels of impurities in the captured CO2 showed to significantly affect the costs of the system. For cases where the captured CO2 was of higher purity, the requirement to the delivered CO2 quality also affected costs to a minor extend. The results indicate that the conditioning system should be designed specifically to the expected inlet composition of captured CO2 and the requirements to quality and pressure level for the delivered CO2.

Rikke is a PhD student in the Section of Thermal Energy at DTU Construct.
She is working with energetic and economic analyses of technologies needed for future CCUS infrastructures. The project focuses on two subparts of the CCUS value chain, namely the conditioning system (liquefaction and purification) as well as the thermodynamic aspects of transportation.
